Fatma Kunang Helmi was born in Yogjakarta, Indonesia.
Education in Switzerland, Australia and Indonesia – 1955 – 1965
1965 High School Diploma, Sancta Ursula, Jakarta, Section Natural Sciences
1965 - 1967 French and English Language Studies at University of Fribourg, Switzerland
1968 - German Studies in preparation for University in Bonn, West Germany
1975 – Magister Atrium in Political Science, International Law, Social and Economic History under Professor Karl-Dietrich Bracher
1974 – 1977 – Post-graduate studies in Bonn, London and Hamburg (scholarship from Stiftung Landes Westfalen)
1977 – 1983 : Experience in photographic media and adult education, commercial photographic studio organization in Hamburg
1983 – 1986 : Radio Work (Deutsche Welle, Indonesian Section) and journalism for Indonesia
1986 : moved to Paris and married Michel Picard, member of CNRS
1986 – 1990 free lance journalism for Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia, Textile magazines USA and Germany
1990 – 1991 research assistant for photo show ‘Towards Independence : A Century of Indonesia Photographed and author of ‘Tassilo Adams, the Photographer as Cultural Observer in accompanying book Ansel Adams Center for Photography, San Francisco October 1991 for Festival of Indonesia in USA.
Author of special section Kalam in Tempo magazine, Henri Cartier-Bresson, published in 17th August Issue 1991
1991 – 1998 continues to write regularily for The Jakarta Post, Dewi and other Indonesian publications, Fables Singapore, guide-books in Singapore and Paris
1994 – 1997 Official Photographer for the Ford Foundation, Gambuh Dance Project Bali
1996 – 1997 active member of organizing committee for the International Batik Conference held in Yogjakarta under the auspices of the Indonesian Ministery of Tourism, Nov 1997 presides a working session
